RD Group is delighted to have worked on a unique project in a very special location in Wales. The Urdd Gobaith Cymru Llangranog Centre is a Welsh-language residential centre located in the picturesque coastal village of Llangrannog. Established in 1932, the centre has played a big role in the educational experience of Welsh schoolchildren for almost a hundred years, with over a million happy campers experiencing the activities on offer at the centre.
Project
The new scheme at the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Llangranog Centre was developed to include the design and build of a new 250+ seat dining block and commercial kitchen; the building of nine en-suite dormitories to sleep 52 visitors – these featured sustainable technologies including Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar PV; and the refurbishment of the administration (Enlli) block and multi-use activity space.
The project also included the development of a new main entrance and reception, featuring sustainable heat from Air Source Heat Pumps, and the repurposing of an existing building into a multi-use activity space with the latest energy-efficient technologies.
The project had a specific focus on sustainable technology. As part of the wider project, RDM also designed and installed underfloor heating, air source heat pumps and solar panels.
Location
Llangrannog is a beautiful coastal village located in Ceredigion, West Wales. The village is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, including sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and rolling hills. The area is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare bird species, marine life, and plants. As a result, sustainability was a key consideration in the development of the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Llangranog Centre. The new facilities were designed to minimise their impact on the natural environment while providing visitors with comfortable and sustainable accommodation.
Challenges
The project at the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Llangranog Centre posed several challenges. The remote location of the centre, combined with the need to minimise disruption to the centre’s activities, meant that careful planning and coordination were essential. Additionally, the project had a specific focus on sustainable technology, which required the installation of energy-efficient systems that would provide reliable heating and hot water while reducing the centre’s carbon footprint.
Solution
We worked closely with our Raven Delta (RD) Group sister-company, EFT Consult, and the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Llangranog Centre to develop a plan that would meet their specific requirements while ensuring minimal disruption to the centre’s activities.
Our team of experienced engineers carried out regular maintenance checks and any issues that arose were quickly and efficiently resolved. Our expertise in sustainable technology enabled the company to design and install energy-efficient systems that would provide reliable heating and hot water while reducing the centre’s carbon footprint.
Outcome
The centre now boasts a range of sustainable and comfortable facilities. The new dormitories provide visitors with a comfortable and sustainable place to stay, while the new dining block and commercial kitchen ensure that visitors are well-fed during their stay. The focus on sustainable technology has also enabled the centre to make significant energy savings, reducing its carbon footprint and ensuring a more sustainable future.
